Attaining a tertiary-level qualification is common cause of jubilation for the recipients, as well as their families and friends. Many graduation ceremonies are usually succeeded by celebratory occasions in honour of the graduands. This is unsurprising in a country with a history like South Africa’s, which has an effect on the current social, political and economic positioning of citizens based on race, gender, class, etc.
Indeed, the majority of students at South African universities not only grapple with financial challenges (such as not having enough money for food, books and accommodation) but also have to deal with the challenges of social integration in a new environment and technology-intensive ways of teaching and learning, which they may have not have been familiar with prior to entering universities.
Those who are able to overcome these kinds of challenges provide a sense of hope to their families. This article highlights the issues discussed above by way of a video in which a spoken-word poet, Ms. Nonhle Mkhize, praises the achievement of Ms. Nokwanda Mazibuko, a recent university graduate from the Durban university of Technology. In her narration, Ms. Mkhize cares to elucidate, in isiZulu, the challenges of university students as well as the symbolism embedded in completing university studies to arrive at the graduation stage.
