Brief Overview

This article is about celebrating the 24th anniversary of South Africa’s entrance to its current democratic dispensation. Contained in the article is a recorded spoken word performance of Sakhile Ngcobo and Nokwanda of the Durban south coast. They use the spoken word to conscientise their audience of South Africa’s history, and the role of the great men and women who persisted in the fight for a just and equitable society. They also mention the challenges that the country faces today such as corruption, high drug use by the youth, and social and political apathy. However, the performance is positive one in that it recognises what the masses can achieve if they work together in building society and it encourages them to do just that.

The attached audio file was recorded at an event organised by InkuluFreeHeid, a youth-led civil society organisation working towards deepening democracy, enhancing social cohesion, and finding solutions to pressing economic issues of the current epoch.
