We interviewed Sister Nomathemba Msibi, who was born in Ladysmith in 1956 on August 8. The Roman Catholic church church was built in 1925 by convent missionaries from France. It is called the Parish of St Joseph. They also built two schools: Eqinisweni Primary School and Nkosinathi High School. They built a clinic, creche and a place where women are taught dress-making. In the beginning only the nuns taught in these schools. Most of the nuns left teaching after there was a strike. The school is now under government. The missionaries built all these things to help the people of the area because they were poor. Now these places are not supported by the missionaries. They make their own money by doing other work hence the creche etc. There is also a convent that was built in 1967. One of the nuns still teaches at the school.
They opened a clinic at Matikwe. This was the first clinic in the area and is known as St Joseph’s Clinic. There is also another clinic that is runned by government. They have a good relationship with the other clinic. Sister Nomathemba has been residing at the convent for 34 years. They run the creche, clinic and the sewing school.
