English Summary: Way of life in the Olden Days
In the olden days it took the whole village to raise a child. And in most cases women were responsible for looking after the homestead and their families because their husbands worked away from home. Women had to make sure that livestock was well looked after and they had to plough crops so that they can feed their children. Men usually visited home during holidays like Easter and Christmas or when there is death in the family, but this depended on where they were working. There were also no hospitals during those days, old women helped young women in giving birth as the father was away, he will be informed by a letter of a new addition in the family, this sometimes took months to do because not all the families had people who can write. Babies were breastfed for two to three years until they were ready to eat adult food. There were no clothing for babies they were wrapped in old clothes and when it was sunny they ran around the yard naked.
Young girls wrapped a piece of cloth around their waists but when they give birth they had to cover their breasts and waists. For boys, those who had family members working in cities, had a pair of trousers, shirt and they will make their own sandals. These clothes were reserved for special days. Some of the games boys played when they were looking after the livestock was swimming, birth hunting etc. Boys also helped each other when someone was sick, they will collect medicinal plant and give to the one who is sick.
There were families who allowed girls to look after livestock, if there was no boy in the family but the chores are mainly done by girls is to collect water, wood, clean the house, cook etc. In the olden days, time to collect water was prescribed people were only allowed to collect water in the early hours of the morning or in the afternoon to give chance to livestock and women who does their washing in the river. Girls were also taught to grind and when one of the people within the area have a ceremony, girls were expected to go and help in that house.
When schools were built, almost all the children started school in age 11 upwards. Boys had the advantage of furthering their studies whereas for girls it was until they are able to write their names and they were taken out of school. Girls and women were not allowed to sit on chairs, they used grass mat if they were caught sitting on a chair, the family had to pay a fine to the chief. For boys if they impregnated a girl before they got married they had to pay a fine to the chief before paying a fine for damages to the girl’s family.
