Chicken Breyani: An Indian Traditional Food

Breyani is the royal dish amongst all the exotic rice dishes of India and is now a traditional recipe which many South Africans use. There are various types of breyani including chicken, fish, mutton, vegetables and prawns breyani.

Ingredients


1 kg chicken (washed/cut)
1 cup black lentils
2 cups rice
2 tablespoons of breyani spices
4 green chillis
2 tablespoon grated tomatoes
2 springs of mint
¼ tablespoon tumeric powder
1 tablespoon salt
6 small potatoes (washed and sliced)
¾ cup oil
1 tablespoon ginger and garlic
2 onions
2 tablespoon chilli powder

Method

Fry the potatoes until golden brown and leave aside.Fry the onions with breyani spices till brown and leave aside. Add the meat, ginger and garlic, turmeric powder, chilli powder with the chilies, salt into a pot and stir briskly. Add tomatoes and mint and allow to cook slowly. Meanwhile, in another pot boil the rice till it is half done and leave aside. Boil the lentils and as it is done add to the half cooked drained rice. Add the half cooked chicken to the rice forming layers with the potatoes and onions. Place the pot in the oven till the moisture has evaporated and the rice is soft. Serve with salad as desired. Serves about six people.
