Burfee: Indian Sweetmeat

Burfee is an Indian sweet meat or milk pudding that is rich and a delicacy. It is made during holy festivities such as Diwali and Ramadaan and is also used as an offering during prayers. There are also various methods of preparing it. Burfee can also be bought from local Indian shops.

Ingredients

  • 1 tin Nespray (powdered milk) (500g)
  • 2 tin nestle cream (155g * 2)
  • 1 tin condensed milk (397g)
  • ¼ cup butter (60g)
  • 1 tin carnation milk (410g)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup sifted icing sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of ground almonds

Method

Step1

  • 1 tin Nespray (powdered milk) (500g)
  • 1 tin nestle cream (155g)
  • Mix Nespray and nestle cream together and leave for 1 hour
  • Put through grinding or food processor till evenly blended

Step 2

  • 1 tin condensed milk (397g)
  • 1 tin nestle cream (155g)
  • ¼ cup butter (60g)
  • 1 tin carnation milk (410g)
  • ½ cup sugar (brown/white)
  • 1 cup sifted icing sugar

Step 3

  • Mix ingredients together. Put in pot and bring to boil. Once it starts boiling, lower the heat but continue to stir to prevent scorching.
  • After about ten minutes the contents will resemble a thick pudding mixture.
  • Remove from the stove and add the nespray mixture (step 1) in small quantities at a time till all have being mixed in.
  • Now add the 1 cup sifted icing sugar and 2 tablespoons ground almonds.
  • Mix well, allow cooling and setting in bowl of choice.
  • Cut in blocks and decorate if desired with sprinkled almonds.Keep refrigerated to harden and serve.
