Article Overview
Heritage Day is one of the newly created (1996) public holidays in South Africa. It encourages celebrating the diversity of cultures that makes up the people of this nation. In KwaZulu-Natal, it was initially known as Shaka’s Day where people commemorated the King Shaka Zulu. Jan Scannell called upon South Africans to celebrate this day as a “Braai Day”. Although a braai is a common gathering, in KwaZulu-Natal this day still has more significance to the Zulu people as it commemorates King Shaka and is celebrated as such.
