Article Overview
The township of KwaMashu, north of Durban, is notorious countrywide for its high levels of crime and violence. However, what is often omitted in the mainstream media is the vibrant cultural experience that the township has to offer. Indeed, the township is home to a community radio station, a performance arts theatre and various sports facilities, which many townships, including mine, cannot claim to possess.
This article therefore details the positive aspects that can be found at KwaMashu and shows a local youth-led Maskandi group from KwaMashu entertaining a welcoming audience at the Howard College Theatre in Durban, with the aim to demonstrate the humanity of the people who reside at KwaMashu.
