Every year, as part of their African Music and Dance Programme, the University of KwaZulu-Natal hosts the African Cultural Calabash. Started in 2006, the annual concert combines the wonders of African cuisine with performances from local musicians who wow guests with everything from contemporary isicathamiya acts to renditions of tarditionals compositions from the likes of the late Princess Magogo.
This year UKZN’s African Music and Dance Ensemble opened the concert to a great reception. Other artists included Eshowe-born griot, Mbuso Khoza, who performed a Kiswahili prayer chant, as well as the KZN Heritage Ensemble. Ulwazi fieldworker,
