She is King!

With John Trengove’s debut feature film Inxeba (The Wound) being shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, the focus is currently on South African filmmaking. But while South Africa may not yet have reached the heights of Nigeria or India when it comes to the big screen, that doesn’t mean that we don’t have great stories to tell!

The recently released She is King tells the tale of a talented young woman from a rural village who travels to Johannesburg to audition for a role in a musical about Zulu Queen, Mkabayi Kajama, King Shaka’s aunt. The story follows the young girl’s search for her identity as a performer, a Zulu speaker, a woman, and a daughter, but is as much a celebration of culture, as it is one of self actualisation and female power.

A lighthearted and entertaining film, that according to the critics “is the perfect holiday flick”!
