No Longer at This Address – Grey Street/Broad Street to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street

Grey Street originally ran from Dartnell Crescent near the Greyville Race Course all the way to the Victoria Embank- ment. Some years ago, however, the section between the bay and West Street was renamed Broad Street. Grey Street was named after Earl Henry George Grey, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies during the 1850s. Grey Street is intricately linked to the history of the Indian population in Durban.

Yusuf Mohamed Dadoo was born in Krugersdrop in 1909. After studying medicine in London, he became involved in the Independent Labour Party and the Indian National Congress. He became a firm champion of the international communist movement, and always attempted to draw the widest possible audience of oppressed blacks and democratic whites into the mainstream struggle. He died in 1983.
