Mandela Day 2018!

As we commemorate what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday we take the opportunity to pay homage to the incredible spirit of Madiba by giving a little back! Below are just of the activities that you can take part in as your way of commemorating the incredible life of one of the world’s most celebrated freedom fighters:

67 Blankets

If you’ve left things a little late, then 67 Blankets has the answer for you! On the 29th July, 67 Blankets are hosting a crochet-a-thon at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick. Their aim is to crochet a 27 km scarf (a Guiness World Record for the longest scarf in the world!), which will then be dismantled and distributed to those in need of a scarf to help keep them warm this winter.

Food Forward SA

Food Forward aims to collect one million meals through a national food drive this July. The meals will be distributed to 600 organisations who feed as many as 250 000 people a day between them!

  • When & where: on the 18th July volunteers can donate 67 minutes of their day to help pack meals at one of the Pick n Pay warehouses

KZN Children’s Hospital

Volunteers at the KZN Children’s Hospital can help to construct the ‘Rainbow Tower’ by buying a brick for R100 (either in person or online). Other activities for Mandela Day include individual brick decoration, painting the external perimeter of the hospital, helping to mosaic garden benches, cleaning windows and general garden maintenance. There will also be stores selling fresh food, tours of the hospital grounds, as well as colouring-in activities for the wee ones!

Grace Family Church

At Grace Family church in uMhlanga you can do your bit by making sandwiches, rolling yarn, planting seedlings or donating blood. Your efforts will benefit a number of NGO partners. And for some added fun there will also be a flag building activities – ever seen the SA flag made out of cupcakes?!

The Magic Bean Foundation

Bring along your #singleuseplastic shopping and bread packets and learn how to recycle and recraft them into plarn (plastic yarn) at the La Lucia Mall. The Magic Bean Foundation will use the plarn to make their beautiful range of products.
