Kinds of porridges
Isijingi is a traditional food, it is divided into two – the one of a pumpkin and one of malt. The one of a pumpkin can be cooked by any women, but the one of sorghum is only cooked by old women who are claimed to be clean, because this is prepared in a special place in the main house regarded as a place where ancestors stay. Everyone can eat isijingi (pumpkin mixed with mealie meal).

How to make pumpkin porridge
First Step
Take dry mealies and chip off, put mealies on the washed grinding stone then grind until mealies is fine to be a mealie meal.

Second step
Take a washed pumpkin cut into slices, peel, and cut the slices into small portions.

Third step
Make fire with wood, put water into a pot and boil it. Add the pumpkin pieces to the boiling water, boil until the pumpkin is soft. Once the pumpkin is soft, add mealie meal, mash and steam. Keep on stirring until it is well mixed. It can be served with sugar.

How to make a malt porridge
Take warm water and mix with mealie meal and malt, stir until the mixture give bubbles. Leave it to stand for one night. The following day take water that has been produced by the mixture (igwele), pour into a pot let it boil. When it boils, take the left over mixture, mix it into the boiling igwele and stir. Steam until the mixture is soft and ready to be served. It can be served with sugar.

Ukuphekwa kwesijingi sethanga
Isijingi sethanga yingxube yethanga kanye nempuphu. Kudala kwakugaywa umbila uze ube yimpuphu. Kubiliswe amanzi eziko ngebhodwe. Kabela ithanga ulenze izingcezu. Uthathe ithanga ulifake ebhodweni emanzini abilayo. Kubile lize lithambe ithanga. Ufake impuphu ugoqoze, wehlise umlilo kuze kuvuthwe. Isijingi sidliwa yiwo wonke umuntu ekhaya.

Ukuphekwa kwesijingi sotshwala
Isikhathi esiningi isijingi sotshwala senziwa uma kulungiselelwa utshwala besintu (besizulu). Uthatha amanzi afudumele uwafake esitsheni, ufake impuphu uhlanganise nemithombo yombila kuyeke kudlule ubusuku obubodwa kuze kubile leyo nhlanganisela ibizwa ngegwele. Ngakusasa bilisa amanzi ngebhodwe uthathe igwele uhlanganise kuze kushube. Ukukhiphe ukupholise sekulungele ukudliwa lokhu kubizwa isijingi sotshwala. Isijingi sotshwala sidliwa kakhulu izalukazi kodwa wonke umuntu angasidla.
