Article overview
The above article shows by way of video content some of the usual characteristics of an umemulo ceremony which is especially organised to accompany the lobola process. The first video shows a wife and husband-to-be jovially celebrating esigcawini (sacred area of the umemulo celebration). At esigcawini, they are not alone but are cordially joined by their close friends and relatives.
This celebratory mood follows a successful process of ukucelwa, which is the first stage of the lobola process, where the families of the bride and groom meet for the first time to, hopefully, establish a long-term inter-generational relationship.
The second video demonstrates a group of young men – dancing in traditional form – a normal scene at most umemulo ceremonies.
The third video shows the young men seen in the previous video dancing – still in traditional form – albeit now solo style, where they show off their unique skills and talents.
Ultimately, the article attempts to demonstrate visually that the umemulo celebration is one which is usually characterised by a reveling of boundless jovial, however still traditional, commemorations.
