Nkanyezi area is at Umbumbulu, this is where Nkanyezi Mountain is found. According to the people of the area, the place was called Nkanyezi because long time ago, someone in the middle of the night went outside when they saw the light on the mountain which was like a star. This star gave light to the whole area and so the name came about, ‘nkanyezi’ means the star.
On the mountain there is a big stone which has a human and a donkey’s footprint. According to Mrs Mkhize, who resides at Nkanyezi, it is believed that many years ago Jesus Christ was passing Nkanyezi Mountain with his donkey and left his and the donkey’s footprint on the rock.
Beliefs
The Christian people especially Roman Catholics go to the mountain to pray for different reasons; like when it has not rained for a long period, they will go to the mountain to pray for rain and the rain will come. Christians go there to pray because they believe that it is the holy place because Jesus left his blessings on the mountain. The Nazareth or Shembe people also go there to pray.
It is also said that, years ago surveyors went to the mountain with an aim of building the road to Pietermaritzburg where the mountain is situated. When they surveyed the mountain they found out that there is a big snake and a dam under the mountain, if they demolish the mountain the whole area will be affected.
