Even those with very little knowledge of Zulu culture will associate the traditional round pit-fired clay pots with the Zulus, such is the importance and significance of these pots in the history of the Zulus. And there’s no better way to experience these pots than by seeing them in the flesh! The Phansi Museum in Durban is currently hosting the exhibition, Earth-Water-Fire: A Festival of Clay, that celebrates the diversity and characteristics of clay, and the role that it plays in the daily lives and rituals of the Zulu people.
In addition to the impressive permanent collection of African and Zulu pots that the Phansi Museum boasts, the exhibition will also feature two prominent South African potters, Andrew Walford, famous for his Anglo-Oriental style, and Ntombi Nala, who comes from a long line of potters from the famous Nala family.
The exhibition opened at the end of May and closes on the 30th July – be sure not to miss it!
