Norman “Winono Mnomzane (Mr. Clean)” Steenkamp was born in 1963 in Wentworth. Norman Steenkamp’s love for soccer began at Merebank Primary School where he initially he played as a striker. In 1980, he was converted to a defender whilst playing for the local premier league club Everton.

In 1981 Steenkamp was selected to represent Southern Natal. It was at the Seven Seas inter-district tournament in Pietermaritzburg, that when Steenkamp caught the attention of Leeds. He made his professional debut, with Leeds in 1982. He later joined Amazulu FC. His most memorable footballing moment was beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in the inaugural Coke KO Cup in 1992. He worked for the SA Navy from 1984 to 2003 and is currently employed by the South African Defence Force as a storeman.
