Duduzile Daphney Hlomuka-Ngubane, well known as “Sis May”, was born in Ladysmith, KZN in 1949. Daphney grew up and attended school in KwaMashu, Durban. She was involved in the arts for decades mainly as an actress on stage, in television and film. Daphney’s first professional production was uShaka on Stage in 1969/1970 following which she appeared in numerous productions which received critical acclaim locally and internationally.
On stage she appeared in productions such as uMabatha (1970) – lead actress – performed locally and toured England; Uqondeni; Shaka Zulu; UMkabayi kaJama; Tooth & Nail; Somdaka; Titus Andronikas (toured UK and Spain). On television she appeared in Cross and The Switchblade; Umuntu akalahlwa; John Ross; Shaka Zulu (TV series); Sgudi Snaysi; Hlala Kwabafileyo, Lead Actress- won the Artes Best Actress Award; Ubambo Lwami; Home Affairs; Stokvel; Scoop Scoombie and Generations.
Daphney also worked for the SABC as a live continuity presenter for TV2. Whilst at the SABC Daphney was also a translator, synchronizer and as a Client Liaison Officer for the Department of Communications at the SABC. She died of cancer in 2008.
