Mr Khetha Shange shared important information on how a boy takes the responsibility of burning incense and communicating with ancestors on the absence of an older male figure at home. It is a rule that this task is only done by a male regardless of the age. The family should be in agreement about this new responsibility, including the father of the child. They should then slaughter a goat to inform ancestors of their decision and give reasons for it. The child is groomed in communicating with ancestors by an adult who is present at home.
A woman is not allowed to carry this task if there are still male figures within the family. If her husband is dead and she doesn’t have a boy child then the brother of the husband should take this responsibility. Some people will ask an individual with the same surname to help them in this regard, bit this is not allowed because it might happen that the forefathers are not the same. Today women can consult with ancestors.
