If you’re looking for somewhere local to visit these holidays the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park might just be a great starting point for your road trip!
Located in the Valley of the Kings just outside of Ulundi, the area boasts great natural beauty, as well as some impressive wildlife – a variety of game have been reintroduced to the park, including the protected black rhino.
There’s also a breathtaking lookout point that you can’t miss thanks to the Amakhosini Monument that was erected by King Goodwill Zwelithini in 2003. The memorial, which consists of a giant ukhamba beer pot surrounded by sculptured horns and tusks of animals, recognises the spirit of the King’s ancestors, many of whom are buried in the valley below. In addition to being an important burial sight, the valley was also once a popular hunting ground. It’s also the place where Shaka spent much of his youth, and where King Dingane fought the Voortrekkers. So if you want a holiday steeped in history, and full of the majesty of Africa, then do yourself a favour and head on down to Zululand to experience the spirit of eMakhosini!
