This Thursday marks the 40 year anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, commemorated in South Africa as Youth Day. While it’s essential that the country moves forward, something that Youth Month, with its focus on youth development aims to achieve, it’s also vital that we don’t forget our past, lest we repeat the same mistakes. Tomorrow sees the book launch of Julian Brown’s The Road to Soweto at Ike’s Books and Collectibles in Durban. Brown’s account of the Soweto Uprising of June 1976, and the decade preceding it, sheds new light on this turning point in South Africa’s history, and paints a vivid picture of the events leading up to the eventual overthrow of apartheid.
