Okwenziwayo Uma Kushone Umuntu Oyiwele

English Summary
In a Zulu culture the birth of twins is considered as a blessing and luck. Twins are treated differently from other children. In this article we are looking at what happens when one dies at a stage when they are married. During this period the wife does not sit on the mattress as it is custom as part of the mourning period and she is not allowed to cry of her dead husband because there is a belief that this will affect another twin. Also the wearing mourning clothes is not allowed for the wife even to slaughter customary animals is prohibited even after a year of passing where the slaughtering of an ox is customary to do.

Only when the second twin passes away that all these customary ceremonies will be performed. Both women are expected to mourn over their dead husband and it is only then that the first twin’s wife will be able to cry over her long dead husband and she will also be allowed to wear mourning clothes. After the mourning period she can also perform customary ceremonies associated with death.

The ceremony of taking off mourning clothes should be done on the same date as twins are considered as an individual according to the Zulu custom.
