Durban’s International Convention Centre has been extremely successful since its inception, helping to make Durban one of the conferencing capitals of the South. The ICC has played host to a variety of events and conferences including the Non-Aligned Movement and the World Conference on Racism. The ICC has recently been expanded, and now includes a state of the art performance arena.
Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was born at the end of the 19th century in what was then Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Having trained as a teacher, Luthuli joined the ANC in 1945 and was elected Natal provincial president in1951. In 1952 he helped to lead the Defiance Campaign, after which he was elected President General of the ANC. In 1961 he became the first African winner of the Nobel peace prize.
