Throughout history people have been fascinated by their genealogy, and nowhere is this more true than in KwaZulu-Natal. The acknowledgement of ancestors is very much a part of Zulu culture, often forming an integral part of ceremonies. Forefathers are acknowledged by way of Zulu names, with each surname having a praise name, or isithakazelo, showing the genealogy, relation and importance of family members. A person’s praise name will be called out when they arrive at someone’s home and is used to show respect or praise for the people carrying that name.
Below are links to three of the clan praises that Jerry wrote about during the month of April. You can search for other Zulu clan names on the Ulwazi wiki by going to www.ulwaziprogramme.org.
