Earlier this year we wrote about Siyafunda, an online learning centre focused on indigenous African languages. Founded by Siya Masuku in 2015, the project initially started out as a crowd funding campaign to help Masuku raise money for the publication of his children’s alphabet book, but it quickly grew into something much larger. Three years down the line Siyafunda have just released two brand new isiZulu comic books!
UNjabulo tells the story of a clever teenage boy, his dog, uJomo, and his neighbourhood friend, uLangawho. The story focuses on uNjabulo’s relationship with his father, who he looks to for advice. Masuku says he hopes to teach children about togetherness through the illustration of ordinary moments between a father and his son. Emkhathini, which loosely translates to ‘in space’, looks at the wonders of our solar system through Njabulo’s eyes.
Both stories have been written by Siya Masuku, and are accompanied by the most wonderful illustrations! So click here to order your copies now, and if you happen to be in Jozi next weekend then make your way down to 27 Boxes where Siya Masuku will be doing a reading – an opportunity not to be missed!
