The person consulted.
This is not a very old game but has been played in the modern-times. The researcher spoke to Ms. N Sibisi of Umlazi B Section. This game is played by girls of school-going age in the rural areas and in the townships.
Who plays this game?
This game is played by girls from the age of 5 years to 14. 3 girls play at the same time.
What is used to play this game?
This game is played using ropes.
When is the game played?
This game is played during the day if it is not raining.
Where is the game played?
This game is played in the yard or in a cleared spot.
How is the game played?
Children tied up the rope on its ends. Two of the girls will put the rope around them, one girl opposite the other so the rope is elongated. The rope would be placed starting below the ankles and gradually moved up the body. The 3rd child plays where the rope is opened up between the two other girls. She jumps over the rope one foot at a time to and fro. As she jumps she is not supposed to touch the rope. If she succeeds the rope is moved up until the player fails to jump over without touching the rope. Then the next player would take her turn and the game would continue until all the girls have had their turns.
Custom associated with this game
This game requires physical strength. It helps children to develop and strengthen their bodies. It also trains them to be able to jump if they encountered situations calling for this action, like jumping over rocks, pits, ditches, and the like.
