SAFM held an interesting discussion this morning about African queens. The discussion centred around the idea of patriarchy, and that the influence and impact that these women had on their communities is still not being celebrated.

What are your thoughts? Are you aware, for example, of the history of Queen Nandi, the mother of King Shaka, or Modjadjithe hereditary queen of Balobedu in Limpopo, and the only female monarch in Africa? Given that a quick Google search on the topic of African queens brings up a result for a website entitled ‘Suppressed Histories’ perhaps this is a topic worth exploring more!

If anyone has any information relating to our Zulu queens and princesses, please feel free to share with the Ulwazi community.
