The Badilisha Poetry Exchange

We are very excited to have discovered the Badilisha Poetry Exchange! Having recorded over 500 poets from 28 countries, Badilisha is currently the largest online collective of African poets. Presented in the format of a radio show, Badilisha scours the continent for talent, and is currently calling for submissions from poets working in indigenous languages, specifically those poets who write and recite in Setswana, Sepedi, Sesotho, isiZulu, Afrikaans, and isiNdebele.

In the coming months representatives from Badilisha will be travelling to Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, North West, Northern Cape and the Free State. Poets from these provinces are invited to submit the following via email to

  • Two written poetry samples (in any of the eligible languages)
  • One audio poetry sample (Voice notes and other mobile phone recordings acceptable. Need not be professionally done)
  • A brief biography
  • A high-resolution photograph

Poets will also have the opportunity to participate in poetry workshops with poetry professionals from the different regions.
