The KZNSA Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition by famed photographer David Goldblatt, entitled Structures of Dominion & Democracy. Described by the late Nobel Laureate, Nadine Gordimer, as “an extraordinary visual history of a country and its people”, the exhibition comprises five decades of images from Goldblatt’s travels across South Africa, during which time he photographed sites weighted with historical narrative. In addition to being visually beautiful, Goldblatt believes that the photographs of the various monuments, religious sites and private spaces are declarations of the values or ethos of the people who built them, and are thus a way of narrating the history of South Africa.
A striking and highly engaging exhibition, Structures of Dominion & Democracy has particular relevance given the current discussions taking place around public monuments in South Africa, and the role or place that they should have in contemporary SA.
Structures of Dominion & Democracy is open for viewing at the KZNSA Gallery until Sunday the 19th April 2015.
