Following on from our blog post last week that looked at alternative tertiary education offered by TSiBA in the Western Cape, Seven Fountains Primary School is a little closer to home, situated in Kokstad in KZN. The school is part of the Creating Schools Programme and was opened in 2007, with the help of the Oprah Angel Network who provided funding for the project. The building was designed by East Coast Architects, with the help of feedback and participation from the community who are also able to use the school’s resources, such as the sports fields, library and computer lab.
From low energy, low maintenance building designs, to community empowerment and a focus on upgrading teachers’ content knowledge and management practices, the work of the Creating Schools Trust provides a blueprint for successful education in KZN, and the rest of the country.
In the right environment and with the right support South Africans really are capable of anything!
