In May each year South Africa celebrates ‘Africa Month’, with an aim to promoting African arts and cultural goods and services, as well as intra-Africa trade. This year the line up of events includes the following:
- !Kauru: Contemporary Art from Africa, a visual celebration of African art
- Gcgwala Ngamasiko, an intra-African multidisciplinary arts festival
- Zakifo Music Festival
- We Are Africa Film Festival
- African Women Writers Symposium
- Conference of the South African Cultural Observatory
The African Art Centre in Florida Road will also be celebrating Africa Month with an exhibition entitled, I Am an African, a nod to former president Thabo Mbeki’s speech that he gave on the occasion of the passing of the new Constitution. The exhibition features a wonderful collection of local KZN artists, including Jabulani Cele, Sibusiso Duma and Zakhele Hlabisa.
