A Tribute to Mama Africa!

This month marks ten years since the passing of Miriam Makeba, who died at the age of 76 after suffering a fatal heart attack. In honour of this anniversary the Alliance Française will be hosting a tribute concert to celebrate the woman who brought the music of Africa to the world.

Earlier this year we wrote about the life of this incredible songstress, when vocalist Thulile Zama was performing her first tribute concert at the Alliance Française. Zama, who performs with band members Rick Pitman, David Smith, Rebekah Doty and Sbusiso Mkhonza, chose to honour Makeba for the musical influence she had on her own career. Speaking in an interview earlier this year, Zama spoke of how her mother would play the then banned albums of Miriam Makeba when she was a child:

So as long as I can remember, Miriam Makeba has been a part of my life’s sound track”

Following on from a sold out performance in April, A Tribute to Mama Africa has toured the country, and is returning to the Alliance on Friday for part two! So if you weren’t able to get tickets previously, now’s your chance! In addition to the soothing tunes of Zama and her band, guests will also be treated to performances by Ulozolo Dancers, with Lucky Cele as choreographer.

Tickets cost R100 and are available for purchase from the Alliance Française: 031 312 95 82/ info.afdbn@alliance.org.za. Doors open at 18:00, with the show starting at 19:00
