Tens of thousands of people descended on the Durban CBD over the weekend as part of the SATMA 2016 Cultural Parade and Carnival. The South African Traditional Music Awards take place towards the end of this month, with the theme, ‘Imbokodo is our Heritage’, recognising the contribution that women have made to the local music industry, and to the country as a whole.
The organisers of SATMA, now in its 11th year, were expecting a crowd of 30 000, but were surprised with numbers at Saturday’s march reaching close to 45 000. Dignitaries in attendance included SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, and Mayor of eThekwini, James Nxumalo.
Look out for more information about SATMA later this month.
