Brief overview

Imvunulo is a traditional way of dressing which was used by the Zulu people before the arrival of European settlers with cotton and modern clothing. Even today it used by people but mostly notably during traditional ceremonies and celebrations. Ukuvunula, which means being traditionally dressed differs depending on gender, age and stages of life for the Zulu people.

Children, girls and boys, young adults, husbands and wives all wear different attires tailored around their age and life stages. Children normally did not wear anything except in cases where it was cold where isiphuko was utilised to protect them from the cold. The material that was used for children is called isibhinco which was made up of a rope that they would wear around the waist.

This article articulates how children are dressed up and it is also differentiated and grouped based on stages and ages of material that is worn by Zulu people. This section covered only children, the other writings to follow will articulate on boys, girls, young adults as well as grown-ups.
