Carrying on from last week’s post that featured the website, SA History Online, MuseuMAfricA offers a look back in time at the continent of Africa, and includes notable collections of musical instruments, head-rests, photographs and rock and mineral samples. The museum, previously known as the Africana Museum, is housed in a former fruit and vegetable market in Newtown, Johannesburg. The museum was established in the early 1930s, but was refurbished in 1994 after the change of government, and includes a number of fascinating long-term exhibitions, including Gandhi’s Johannesburg: The birthplace of Satyagraha, and My Culture?, an exhibition that explores and tries to make sense of cultural groups: what they are, how they change over time, and how they can be used and abused.
