Durban Living Legend – Buddy Govender

Sports legend Buddy Govender was born in Sydenham, Durban in 1960. His passion for karate and soccer began in 1969. He joined Goju Kai Karate School at age 9 and in 1976 he was graded to Shodan under Yamaguchi Goshi Shihan. In 1997 Buddy trained at Jundokan in Naha, Okinawa under Miyazato Ei’ichi Hanshi where he was awarded the grade of Yondan (4th Dan). On top of that Buddy was appointed Sensei Miyazato’s official representative in South Africa.

His first football club was Avalon Celtic, but later joined D’ Alberton Callies. Sixteen was the age at which he made his debut semi-professional appearance as soccer player for Royals. In 1979, he turned professional when he joined Leeds United. In 1980, he joined Berea F.C. playing for them for two seasons before joining AmaZulu F.C. for nine years, during which period he was loaned to African Wanderers in 1982.
