Hlasela is an organisation for youth of the INK area which covers areas such as Inanda, Ntuzuma, and Kwa Mashu. This organisation is made up of people who are leaders in the community such as ward councillors, musicians and members of the South African Police Service.
One of the members of the organisation Lieutenant Xulu, who is the station commander of the Kwa mashu Police Station said, “We are working very hard with our community to reduce the fast growth of crime and we have many programmes in place that would ensure that those who are not involved in criminal activities stay away from such activities for good”.
A drug called Whoonga is one of the worst drugs in this area and it is highly used by the youth. This drug is made with ARV’s which are intended for the people who are HIV positive. Whoonga is highly consumed by unemployed young people and it is seen as one of the reasons for the fast growth of crime because those who are addicted to it would do anything to get money for this dangerous drug.
Hlasela is mainly focussed on ensuring that the youth attend school and do productive activities during their spare time.
